Do I still need a website if I already have Facebook and Instagram?

Social media is great for reaching people. Here is why most Malaysian SMEs still need a website for being found and trusted.

Plenty of small businesses in Malaysia run entirely on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and do fine. So it is a fair question: why pay for a website at all? The short answer is that social media is good for reaching people who already follow you, and a website is good for being found by people who do not.

Google does not rank your Instagram for most searches

When someone searches "dentist Shah Alam" or "aircon service Subang", Google mostly shows Maps listings and websites. Social profiles rarely rank for service searches like these. Without a website, you depend on your Maps listing alone, and a listing with a website linked to it generally looks more complete to customers.

Customers check you before they message you

For anything more expensive than a coffee, people look you up before they contact you. A proper website with your services, prices or price ranges, address and real photos answers their questions and makes you look established. A feed of promotional posts makes them scroll to find the same information.

You do not own your social accounts

Accounts get hacked, restricted or buried by algorithm changes, sometimes overnight. Your website and domain belong to you. Even if social reach drops, the address on your business cards and your Google listing keeps working.

So which should you focus on?

Both, for different jobs. Keep posting on social media to stay in front of existing customers. Use a simple website as the one place that always has the correct information, and link to it from your bio, your Google Business Profile and your WhatsApp profile.
