How to set up a Google Business Profile for your Malaysian business

A plain guide for Malaysian small businesses to claim and set up a Google Business Profile, so people searching nearby can find, trust and contact you.

When someone in Petaling Jaya searches "clinic near me" or "kedai kopi Bangi", the first thing they usually see is a map with a few businesses listed under it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and setting one up is free. If you run a shop, clinic, workshop or office, it is one of the most useful things you can do in an afternoon.

This guide walks through what it is, how to set it up properly, and the mistakes that quietly hold listings back.

What a Google Business Profile actually is

It is the box that appears on Google Search and Google Maps when someone looks up your business name or a service in your area. It shows your address, opening hours, phone number, photos, reviews and a button for directions. Customers often make their decision from this box without ever visiting a website.

1. Check whether a listing already exists

Search for your business name on Google Maps first. Google sometimes creates listings automatically from public information, so yours may already be there, unclaimed. If it is, claim it instead of creating a second one. Duplicate listings confuse customers and make it harder for Google to know which one is real.

2. Choose the right category

The main category tells Google what kind of business you are, and it has a big effect on which searches you appear for. Pick the one that matches your core service as closely as possible. A car workshop should choose a car repair category, not a general "shop". You can add a few secondary categories for other things you do, but keep them honest.

3. Get your name, address and phone number exactly right

Use your real business name as it appears on your signboard. Do not stuff extra keywords into the name, because Google can suspend listings that do this. Write your address the way a delivery rider would need it, with the unit number, building or taman name, and postcode.

Then keep the same name, address and phone number on your website, Facebook page and anywhere else you are listed. Small differences, like "Jalan" in one place and "Jln" in another, are usually harmless, but a different phone number or an old address can cause real confusion.

4. Verify the listing

Google needs to confirm that you really are at that location. Depending on your business, verification may be by phone, email, a video or a postcard, and the options you see can differ from other businesses. Do not skip this step. An unverified listing cannot be fully managed, and you cannot respond to reviews on it.

5. Add real photos and complete every field

Upload photos of your shopfront, your inside space, your team and your work. People use the shopfront photo to recognise the place when they arrive, which matters in busy areas like Subang, Klang or Cheras where many units look alike. Fill in opening hours carefully, including public holidays and Hari Raya closures, and add a WhatsApp or phone number people actually answer.

6. Ask for reviews and reply to them

Reviews are a large part of how people choose between nearby options. Ask happy customers to leave one, in person or by sending a link over WhatsApp after the job is done. Never offer something in return for a review, and never write your own, as both can get reviews removed.

Reply to reviews politely, including the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint often says more about your business than the complaint itself.

Mistakes that hold listings back

The common ones are a wrong pin on the map, opening hours that were never updated, an old phone number nobody answers, and a listing created by a former staff member whose login nobody remembers. Check the pin by searching your own business on your phone and tapping the directions button. If it sends a customer to the wrong lot, fix it today.

Also check the profile every few months. Add new photos, update your hours before festive seasons, and make sure the owner, not an outside helper, holds the main access to the account.

Link it to your website

Add your website address to the profile. The listing gets people to your door or your phone, and the website answers the questions they have before they decide. The two work better together than either does alone.
