What actually affects the cost of a website in Malaysia

Why website quotes in Malaysia range from a few hundred ringgit to tens of thousands, and what you are really paying for at each level.

Ask five people in Malaysia to quote for a website and you will get five very different numbers. That is not because four of them are trying to cheat you. They are often quoting for very different things. Here is what actually moves the price, so you can compare quotes properly.

1. Number of pages and how custom they are

A one-page site with your services, photos and contact details is the smallest job. Every extra page adds design and writing work, especially if each page has its own layout instead of reusing a template. A 5-page business site usually costs a lot more than a one-pager, because of the layout and content decisions behind each page, not the page count itself.

2. Template vs custom design

A template-based site is cheaper because the design already exists. The trade-off is that you look like every other business using the same theme, and you inherit whatever slowness the theme brings. A custom design costs more up front, but it is built around your business and is usually faster.

3. Whether you can edit it yourself

If you want to update prices, photos or menus without calling a developer, the site needs a content dashboard. That is extra work to build, but it usually pays for itself the first few times you would otherwise have paid someone to change a line of text.

4. Online payments and ecommerce

Taking money online is the biggest jump in cost. A store needs a catalog, cart, checkout, a payment gateway with FPX and ewallets, order emails, stock tracking and policy pages. Each piece has to work reliably, because a broken checkout loses real sales.

5. Who writes the content and provides photos

Many quotes assume you supply all the text and images. If the developer has to write your copy or arrange photography, that is real extra work and should be priced as such. Always check which one your quote assumes.

6. The yearly costs people forget

A domain name and hosting are ongoing costs, and someone has to keep the site updated and secure. Some quotes look cheap because they leave these out, then charge for them later. Ask what is included in year one and what renewal will cost from year two.

How to compare quotes

Put each quote side by side and check: how many pages, custom or template, can you edit it yourself, is the domain and hosting included, how many rounds of revisions, and who owns the site and code at the end. A quote that is clear on all six is usually more trustworthy than a cheaper one that is vague.
