Your domain name is your website address, the part that looks like yourbusiness.com. It is also what sits after the @ in your business email. Most owners spend a few minutes choosing it and never think about it again, until the site goes offline or someone else controls it.
Here is how to choose a good one, which ending to use, and how to avoid the ownership and renewal problems we see most often.
Domain and hosting are two different things
The domain is the address. Hosting is the space where your website files actually live. You need both for a site to work, and they are often bought from different companies. When a quote says "domain and hosting included", ask how long that lasts and what happens after the first year.
1. Choose a name people can say and spell
Imagine telling the address to a customer over the phone or on WhatsApp voice. If you have to spell it twice, it is too complicated. Your business name is usually the best choice, since that is what people will search for.
Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings. If your business name can be written two ways, such as a Chinese name romanised in different styles, pick the version printed on your signboard and use it everywhere.
Shorter is better, but do not squeeze the name until it means nothing. A clear, slightly longer name beats a clever short one.
2. .com or .com.my?
A .com is the most familiar ending. Customers type it by habit, and it works well if you also sell to people outside Malaysia. A .com.my tells visitors straight away that you are a Malaysian business. It is generally meant for registered Malaysian businesses, so expect the registration to ask for proof of your business details.
Either is fine. If your preferred name is available in both, you can register both and send one to the other. What matters more is choosing one main address and printing that one on your signboard, invoices and social media bios.
3. Make sure the domain is registered in your name
This is the mistake that causes the most trouble. Domains are sometimes registered under the name of a nephew who helped out, a former staff member or a freelancer who has since moved on. If that person stops replying, you may not be able to renew, move or change the domain.
Whoever sets up your domain, ask for the registrant details and check that your business or your own name is listed. Also check that the contact email is one you can actually open. Renewal reminders and transfer codes go to that inbox.
4. Treat renewal as a yearly deadline
Domains are rented one year at a time, sometimes longer. If the renewal is missed, the website and any email on that domain can stop working. After a grace period, the name may be released, and then anyone can register it, including a competitor.
Put the expiry date in your phone calendar with a reminder a month before. Switch on auto-renew if the provider offers it, and make sure the payment card on file has not expired. A forgotten renewal during a busy festive season is a painful way to lose sales.
5. Consider email on your own domain
An address like hello@yourbusiness.com looks more established than a free webmail address, especially when you send quotations or reply to enquiries from companies. It also means your customers see the same name in your email and your website address. You do not have to switch everything at once. Many owners start with one shared address for enquiries.
6. Keep a simple record
Write down four things and keep them somewhere safe: which company the domain is registered with, the email used for the login, the expiry date, and who has access. Share it with one trusted person in your business, so the knowledge does not live in a single head.
If you change web developers later, this record makes the handover quick. Without it, getting access back can take weeks.
Domains are a small thing until they go wrong, and they are easy to get right at the start. With NullPointer Hub, the first year of domain and hosting is included, with a yearly renewal after that.
